I have an idea for a business, but how can I find out if it is legal?
I know that I can just hire an attorney, but I do not have the resources for that. If I just create the business (it will be an online business) and incorporate in a state, will the state department tell me if it is legal or not, or will I just end up getting sued if it is illegal. Thanks for the help!
It would kind of be like a charity-type organization, but it would bring me an income.
I also do not want the government to always be looking over my shoulder at my business ( I mean all the paperwork a non-profit must do in order to follow the regulations of the IRS ).
If you want to be non-profit then you have to show proof, otherwise it’s a for profit business.
Non profit businesses are still allowed to have some profit though, for funds, like to fund growth.
And you can draw an income from a charity, what do you think they pay administration with? There’s some concern with certain charities because over 50% of their income goes to paid workers and not enough trickles down to their actual cause.
But if you want to do it, do it right, talk to a lawyer and accountant. You don’t want to find out when you get charged.
An accountant will answer your money questions, which these are. So at least go to one of those.

I think the best place to ask this question would be here:

You may find someone more qualified to answer.
Good luck!

Actually hiring an attorney is not as expensive as you think. Those days are over. If you have cable you can afford an Attorney to get the help you need. It’s better to get info from top attorneys than everyday people. I’ve dealt with my business and personal issues both ways. The days of using barbershop attorneys and handling things on my own are gone. Good luck in your business I hope this info helps you.
